Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy

Radiant Catalyst Nursery (RCN)

Introduction

At Radiant Catalyst Nursery (RCN), we are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children. We recognise our responsibility to ensure that children are protected from harm and supported in a safe, nurturing environment.

1. Purpose

This policy outlines RCN's approach to safeguarding and child protection, ensuring all staff, volunteers, and visitors understand their responsibilities in protecting children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

2. Legal Framework

This policy is based on statutory guidance and legislation, including:

  • Children Act 1989 & 2004
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018
  • Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2024
  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework

3. Key Principles

  • All children have a right to be protected from harm.
  • Safeguarding is everyone's responsibility.
  • The welfare of the child is paramount.
  • Concerns must be acted on immediately and appropriately.
  • We work in partnership with families and safeguarding agencies.

4. Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL): Oversees all safeguarding matters and ensures policies are implemented.
  • Deputy DSL: Supports the DSL and acts in their absence.
  • All Staff: Must be vigilant, attend training, and report any concerns immediately.

5. Recognising Abuse

Staff are trained to recognise signs of:

  • Physical abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • Sexual abuse
  • Neglect

Indicators may include bruising, withdrawal, fearfulness, developmental delays, or inappropriate behaviour.

6. Reporting Procedures

All concerns must be reported to the DSL immediately. If a child is in immediate danger, emergency services must be contacted.

RCN maintains detailed records of concerns, disclosures, and referrals to children's services.

7. Safer Recruitment

RCN ensures all staff and volunteers undergo enhanced DBS checks. References are thoroughly reviewed and safeguarding responsibilities are highlighted in all job descriptions.

8. Training and Awareness

All staff receive regular safeguarding and child protection training, including induction and annual refreshers. DSLs undergo advanced training every two years.

9. Whistleblowing

RCN encourages staff to raise concerns about poor practices or misconduct. Staff will be protected from victimisation for whistleblowing in good faith.

10. Partnership with Parents

We work closely with parents and carers, keeping them informed of safeguarding procedures while maintaining confidentiality where necessary to protect children.

11. Policy Review

This policy is reviewed annually or sooner if there are changes in legislation, guidance, or practice.
